Acupuncture and Sub Fertility A Repost By Request

Acupuncture boosts the effectiveness of high-tech reproductive medicine procedures. Clinical studies have found that adding acupuncture to traditional in-vitro fertilization (IVF) treatments increased pregnancy success. There is also evidence that acupuncture stimulates blood flow and egg production in women who can't or decline to use fertility medications to help them get pregnant. Studies have shown a clear link between acupuncture and the body's natural "feel good" brain chemicals (endorphins).
Acupuncture also appears to affect two areas of the brain that control hormone production (the hypothalamus and pituitary glands) as well as the ovaries. Acupuncture may also "boost" the uterine lining when it is too weak to sustain a pregnancy, a problem known to increase the risk of miscarriage.
If you’re having difficulty becoming pregnant, why not try a natural, drug-free method to boost your fertility?

Here's Your Healthy Tip of the Day:  If you are experiencing sub fertility, call or email the office today and do what all my new parent-patients did for their fertility challenges...acupuncture.

Why Some of Us Should Not Eat Soy

Some of us are meat eaters, some of us are vegetarians/vegans and any variation of diet that's out there today.  But, why can't some of us tolerate soy?  Here are some facts on soy that you may not know about.  As always, everything in moderation is fine in the diet and soy should be viewed in the same manner by which one would moderate alcohols, fats, meats, etc.  Here we go:
"...
  • Soy is the second-most genetically modified crop in the United States.  Only corn beats soy in this arena.
  • Soy never neutralizes its 'anti-nutrients' (phytates, protease inhibitors, lectins and saponins).  These 'anti-nutrients' are the elements that are contained in the soy to protect the seed and plant and this is a huge reason why many of us cannot digest soy (usually the same folks who cannot digest corn as well).
  • For most of us, having soy in moderation in our diet is not a problem, but too much soy can lead to damage of the stomach lining and some other digestive ailments.
  • If we ate fermented soy, there would be fewer digestive problems involved with the ingestion of this protein.  Most Americans ingest soy through soy milk, tofu, additive to other foods or as a textured vegetable protein (TVP).
  • Feeding soy milk to babies may not be the best idea.  Soy milk has been linked to autoimmune thyroid and pediatric problems, aluminum toxicity and early puberty (because of its high estrogen content).  It affects protein digestion and pancreatic function.  It lacks vitamin D and reduces the bioavailability of zinc, iron and lacks cholesterol (necessary for nerves, hormones and brain development).  Soy is a huge comoponent of baby formula...another 'health' food on the market for the second largest crop..."
  • For the breast cancer patient...if your cancer cell is estrogen/progesterone receptive and you eat soy; you are feeding the cancer cells!

Here's Your Healthy Tip of the Day:  be smart!  Read more about soy online and educate yourselves about this food as you would read up on any other food source.  Just because  you hear 'it's good for you' on the television, doesn't mean it's good for you in particular!
Today's material was provided to you via the hard work and research of Dr. Marlene Merritt, DOM, LAc, Can and the complete article 'Food Myths:  Bamboozled By The Soy Hype', can be found at www.acupuncturetoday.com January 2011, volume 12, Number 1.

Acupuncture Reduces Stress of Embryo Transfer

A recent study showed that 64.7% of women who received acupuncture achieved pregnancy, compared with 42.5% of women who had no acupuncture during embryonic transfer.  The women who received acupuncture pre and post ET reported lower perceived stress scores preET and post ET than those who did not.

Here's Your Healthy Tip of the Day:  OK, ladies and gents.  Life is difficult enough and now you've decided to undergo ET.  Do it right....schedule yourselves for some acupuncture...take the stress out of the process.  It could really mean the difference of pregnancy on the first try, or a very expensive and more stressful second attempt.

Adult Vaccines You Might Want to Receive

Today's blog is courtesy of Prevention Magazine...
"Millions of American adults forgo lifesaving vaccinations, so Prevention asked top infectious disease experts which shots you need most. Consult this list, then talk with your doctor about caveats: Certain vaccines aren't right for pregnant women or anyone whose immune system is compromised.

Tetanus and diphtheria (Td), plus whooping cough (Tdap)
You may have gotten Td before, but immunity wears off, so you need booster shots. Tdap also protects against whooping cough, which is highly contagious. Though not usually serious in adults, it can be deadly in babies, who typically catch it from adults. You need it if...It's been 10 years since your last Td vaccine.  You're under 65 and have never had a Tdap. Get one instead of your next Td.  You're around infants and it's been 2 years or more since your last Td. Get a Tdap now.

Measles, mumps, and rubellaThough these diseases had almost vanished in the U.S., international travel and reduced vaccination rates have resulted in outbreaks in recent years, making the MMR vaccination essential.
You need it if... You were born between 1957 and about 1975 and/or have never had an MMR series--especially if you're around infants (who aren't immunized until after age 1).

Pneumonia, and its complications, such as meningitis
It's critical because the pneumococcal vaccine fights pneumonia and its complications, which can be life threatening in the very young, the very old, and those with underlying health problems.
You need it if...You're 65 or older.  You have asthma, diabets, heart disease, liver disease, or other serious health problems.  You smoke.

Here's Your Healthy Tip of the Day:  Be smart!  The world has grown into a very small place and international travel has led to many diseases thought long erradicated from this country making a fierce comeback (bedbugs aren't a disease, but they seem to really dig NYC as their hot tourist destination these days).  Protect yourselves.  Speak with you M.D. about appropriate vaccinations.  On another note:  there's much talk about childhood vaccines possibly being the cause for rampant autism.  I disagree.  If this were true, why aren't more adults autistic??  I have a patient who caught polio at 9 months of age and has been living with full body braces for over 40 years.  Now, this person's upper body is steadily fatiguing from the burden it has had all these years struggling with crutches.  A vaccine could have prevented this.  Did you know that denying a male child from the mumps vaccine can lead to orcchitis (inflamation of the testes) which will lead to certain infertility?  As a parent, everyone wants to do what's best for their child....think of how your child would live a life crippled or infertile because of your decision....

Understanding Hormones Part 5

Did you know that the two most common causes of low hormonal levels are stress and inflammation?

Did you also know that when there are hormonal imbalances in the body, the detoxification process goes more than south and this can mean:  back up of toxins in the body.  This can affect the liver, gallbladder and intestines.  Acne, body odor, and bad breath can occur...all this happens because the waste products and toxins are not being detoxified and excreted and are appearing elsewhere in the body in the most unattractive ways.  Constipation can become a real problem, as well as smelly vaginal secretions.  Infertility, weight gain, weight loss, mood changes, lack of libido are all affected.  You get the picture, right?
Here's Your Healthy Tip of the Day:  So now that you're the expert on hormones and what they're supposed to do for you, get on the stick today and help make happy hormones.  It's pretty easy...get the blood test, come into my office and we'll talk about your levels, enroll yourself into my Wellness Program and in about 12 weeks, you'll be a new you!  I'll get you as fit as a fiddle, and make your hormones get happy!  You'll be relieved of stress, insomnia and those aches and pains as a result of inflamation will dissipate.  We wake up everyday, so we might as well be as healthy and happy while we're here.  Let's get goin'!

Acupuncture Demystified via The Wall St Journal

Acupuncture has long baffled medical experts and no wonder: It holds that an invisible life force called qi (pronounced chee) travels up and down the body in 14 meridians. Illness and pain are due to blockages and imbalances in qi. Inserting thin needles into the body at precise points can unblock the meridians, practitioners believe, and treat everything from arthritis and asthma to anxiety, acne and infertility.
· Arthritis of the Knee: Acupuncture significantly reduced pain and restored function, according to a 2004 government study.

· Headaches: Two 2009 reviews found that acupuncture cut both tension and migraine headaches.

· Lower Back Pain: Acupuncture eased it in a big study last year, but so did a sham treatment where needles didn't penetrate the skin.

· Cancer: Has proven effective in reducing nausea and fatigue caused by chemotherapy.

· Infertility: Improves the odds of pregnancy for women undergoing in-vitro fertilization, according to a 2008 review of seven clinical trials.

· Addiction: Often used to help quit smoking, drinking, drug use and overeating.

After decades of cynicism, Western medical experts are using high-tech tools to unravel the ancient mysteries of how acupuncture works.

Everybody's Grandma

An old woman who I called 'Grandma' once told me this: "Kelley, no matter what, everybody has to have something to eat".  Simple, concise, a true-ism....words I've never forgotten.  'Grandma' had raised several children as a single parent when that type of lifestyle was not the norm.  Not only did she feed her family, but she made sure everyone who came to her door also had something to eat.  I think of her often and with love.

From time to time, after having a wonderful meal at a fab restaurant, I'd have my 'doggie bag' on my lap, sitting on the train - already looking forward to the leftovers.  And from time to time, I'd encounter a 'homeless' person passing through the car, looking for some change, and telling some story of how they arrived at their predicament in life.  I've always offered my leftover meal, told them what it was and how good it was; it was always accepted with gratitude and a 'God bless you'.  Grandma's words would just shout out in my mind....everybody has to have something to eat--simple, nothing more, nothing less.

Nutrition is a strange bird...some of us have been on 'diets' our entire lives; always struggling with that extra 5, 10, 15 pounds of too much of whatever it is that we indulge in.  Other people deliberately starve themselves or purge after gorging themselves, so they can see every bone in their body.  We have choices to eat or not eat...unlike many humans who strive everyday to get a bowl of rice into their bellies.

Nutrition is fuel; we need to eat so that our bodies can produce proteins, fats, hormones, strong bones and brain cells, red and white blood cells; we need to maintain homeostasis.  When we do not feed ourselves properly (whether this be from overeating or starving), we become infertile, our brain cells die, our bones become brittle, our vital organs fail, we look far older than we are, we become ill, we die.

We are an accident of birth - we are lucky to have a roof over our heads, think about what we'd LIKE to eat for dinner, whether we should go to the gym or go get that cake from the bakery.  Take advantage of your good luck today, eat well, honor your body and share your good fortune with someone who has none.  Keep two pieces of fruit in your gym bag.  After your workout, eat a piece of fruit and if you see someone who has nothing, offer them that second piece of fruit.  You'll do something healthy for yourself, and for someone else who really needs it!

'Grandma' wasn't my grandmother, she was everyone's grandma.
