Avoid Animal Fat to Help Reduce Arthritis Pain

Animal fats are high in Omega-6 fatty acids, NOT Omega-3 fatty acids.  Omega-6 fatty acids actually increase inflamation in our bodies!, Red meat, butter, and sour cream are some examples of animal fats.  If you suffer from RA (rheumatoid arthritis), you should avoid these food sources and you will help minimize the pain and swelling that comes with RA.  Follow a Mediterranean diet, which is plentiful in fresh fruits and vegetables, whole grains, olive oil, and lean protein sources.

Here's Your Healthy Tip of the Day:  If you suffer from RA or gout or any other arthritic pain and are confused or ignorant as to which foods you should and should not eat, call or email my office today and enroll in my Wellness Program.  Together, we will formulate a plan that will suit your lifestyle and help you reduce your pain and inflamation.  A caveat:  acupuncture is highly effective in the treatment for arthritic pain.  Enroll today!

Sticking It To Arthritis Pain

Acupuncture and Chinese Herbology is a therapy that has been studied extensively. It can be quite effective in managing pain and reducing stress associated with living with the chronic arthritis and extremely successful in the prevention of osteoarthritis if therapy is sought early enough.

DID YOU KNOW???
That as early as in 1980, the World Health Organization endorsed acupuncture for the treatment of some 40 ailments, including both osteoarthritis and rheumatoid arthritis.
In 1997, an National Institute of Health panel also concluded that acupuncture was not only helpful for postoperative pain and nausea, but also could help in the treatment of fibromyalgia and other musculoskeletal conditions, and without the side effects of anti-inflammatory drugs.
The University of Maryland School of Medicine recently completed a four-year National Institute of Health-funded study, the largest ever undertaken, to determine how well acupuncture works. The results, published in December 2004 in the Annals of Internal Medicine, found that traditional Chinese acupuncture significantly reduces pain and improves function for patients with knee osteoarthritis who have moderate or more severe pain despite taking pain medication. But let’s not forget Chinese Herbal treatments - both internal and external.

Here's Your Healthy Tip of the Day:  If you suffer from arthritis pain, call or make an appointment for an acupuncture treatment today and 'stick it' to that nasty pain.

Me and My Rice Sock: Treat Arthritic and Muscle Pain Effectively and Cheap!

Many years ago, I tore my right medial gastrocnemius (translation:  I tore my right calf muscle).  Now, if any of you out there have not had this experience, this is what that felt like:  ever been hit by a baseball thrown directly at you? There is pain, swelling and limited mobility of the affected limb.  I could walk only by swinging my lower right leg (I couldn't bend the leg, so I couldn't negotiate stairs, etc).  One of my mother's friends, who is from China made me a 'rice sock' to heat up in the microwave oven and place over the torn muscle.  Within 10 minutes the pain dissipated, the lower leg was only 20% swollen compared to before placing the sock on the limb.  I've been a fan of rice socks ever since and I still use the same sock Lilly gave me over 10 years ago.

Here's Your Healthy Tip of the Day:  Take an old fashioned tube sock and fill it with uncooked cheap rice, so that it resembles a slinky.  Tie a knot at the end of the sock.  For muscle or arthritic pain, heat the sock for about a minute or so in the microwave oven (be careful, it can get really hot!) and wrap the sock around whatever hurts.  After about 20 minutes, take the sock off the affected area; move and stretch.  Try it... I promised you, it works!!!!

Acupuncture Demystified via The Wall St Journal

Acupuncture has long baffled medical experts and no wonder: It holds that an invisible life force called qi (pronounced chee) travels up and down the body in 14 meridians. Illness and pain are due to blockages and imbalances in qi. Inserting thin needles into the body at precise points can unblock the meridians, practitioners believe, and treat everything from arthritis and asthma to anxiety, acne and infertility.
· Arthritis of the Knee: Acupuncture significantly reduced pain and restored function, according to a 2004 government study.

· Headaches: Two 2009 reviews found that acupuncture cut both tension and migraine headaches.

· Lower Back Pain: Acupuncture eased it in a big study last year, but so did a sham treatment where needles didn't penetrate the skin.

· Cancer: Has proven effective in reducing nausea and fatigue caused by chemotherapy.

· Infertility: Improves the odds of pregnancy for women undergoing in-vitro fertilization, according to a 2008 review of seven clinical trials.

· Addiction: Often used to help quit smoking, drinking, drug use and overeating.

After decades of cynicism, Western medical experts are using high-tech tools to unravel the ancient mysteries of how acupuncture works.

Rainy Day Blues

Oh, we're in for a 4 day spell of rain, wind and raw, damp weather here in Manhattan.  This can lead to sinus headaches, aches and pains in the joints and the feeling of being 'down in the dumps'.
This is because of the combination of the barometric pressure and humidity in the atmosphere.  The devilish duo cause a feeling of heaviness or being 'weighed down'.
The Healthy Tip of the Day??  Acupuncture is proven to be quite effective for joint pain, headaches, depression and anxiety.
Laser Facial Treatments are great for headaches and gives your whole visage a 'lifted' appearance!!!
WOW!  Try that one on and see what happens.
Lastly...mild exercise to move the joints and circulation burns off excess fluid and will help to alleviate the headache and joint pains.  The natural endorphins released by the exercise will give you a 'good high' and you'll be smiling before you know it!!
Happy Friday, everyone and Nurse Sooki sends her thanks to all of you who sent her birthday wishes...she even got a carrot cake from one of her fans!!!
