Memorial Sloan Kettering Opens New Center For Stem Cell Research

From the MSKCC site:  "To take advantage of the potential of embryonic stem cells and human adult cells to produce regenerative treatments and provide insights into cancer, the Sloan-Kettering Institute has created a new Center for Stem Cell Biology (CSCB). Led by stem cell biologist Lorenz P. Studer, the virtual center will foster collaborations among Sloan-Kettering Institute investigators working in the field."

Acupuncture Proven Treatment for the Cancer Patient

Acupuncture for Head and Neck Cancer

For many of the more than 100,000 individuals diagnosed with head and neck cancer each year in the United States, the cancer spreads from its primary location to lymph nodes in the neck. When this occurs, nerves known as spinal accessory nerves must also be removed along with the affected lymph node, which can lead to shoulder function problems.
A recent study [PubMed Abstract] conducted by Memorial Sloan-Kettering investigators and published in the April 2010 issue of the Journal of Clinical Oncology sought to determine if acupuncture could reduce pain and dysfunction in individuals with cancer of the head or neck who had received a surgical dissection of lymph nodes in their neck. The study evaluated 58 patients who were suffering from chronic pain or dysfunction as a result of neck dissection. For four weeks, study participants were randomly assigned into one of two groups: those receiving weekly acupuncture sessions and those receiving standard care, which included physical therapy, as well as pain and antiinflammatory medication.
The study found that individuals in the group receiving acupuncture experienced significant reductions in pain and dysfunction when compared with individuals receiving standard care. Individuals in the acupuncture group also reported significant improvement in xerostomia, a condition in which patients receiving adjuvant radiation therapy experience extreme dry mouth.

Here's Your Healthy Tip of the Day:  If you or someone you care for is undergoing treatment for cancer, call or email my office today and get onboard with a treatment plan that will reduce or eliminate the symptoms of your treatments.  I am a trained in the care of the cancer patient from Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center and only a practitioner who has special oncology training should treat the cancer patient/survivor.

Caregivers Need To Take Care Of Themselves

This morning, as I am sitting in front of my computer thinking about what I can offer to you today, the thought occurred to me:  caregivers need to take care of themselves first.
Being a caregiver to a child, an elder person, a sick individual or in my cirucumstance, a sick dog...it takes a toll on your well-being.  This is why we, as caregivers, must take good care of ourselves first.  If we are not in good condition, how can we possibly care for another who needs us?
So here's Your Healthy Tip of the Day:  if you are a caregiver, to your best ability, create normalcy in your life.  Try to eat well, exercise as much as you can and above all, get enough rest.  You have more than your share of stress in your life and you need to do as much as you can to stay healthy by keeping up with your immune system.  To any of you out there who knows a caregiver...do something nice for them once in a while.  Whether it't doing an errand for them or treating them to a mani/pedi or even to 'sit in' for an hour or so and lend a hand to the caregiving - it's a blessing.  As I took a break from writing this blog today to calm my dog who has experienced a sudden seizure of wheezing due to her nasal tumor, I realized that more than ever, I've got to be on the top of my game.  If I'm not 150%, then I'm no good to her.  You can't slide with your Wellness Program when you have another life to take care of.  So, if you're healthy, then appreciate what you have and nuture it.

Acupuncture Demystified via The Wall St Journal

Acupuncture has long baffled medical experts and no wonder: It holds that an invisible life force called qi (pronounced chee) travels up and down the body in 14 meridians. Illness and pain are due to blockages and imbalances in qi. Inserting thin needles into the body at precise points can unblock the meridians, practitioners believe, and treat everything from arthritis and asthma to anxiety, acne and infertility.
· Arthritis of the Knee: Acupuncture significantly reduced pain and restored function, according to a 2004 government study.

· Headaches: Two 2009 reviews found that acupuncture cut both tension and migraine headaches.

· Lower Back Pain: Acupuncture eased it in a big study last year, but so did a sham treatment where needles didn't penetrate the skin.

· Cancer: Has proven effective in reducing nausea and fatigue caused by chemotherapy.

· Infertility: Improves the odds of pregnancy for women undergoing in-vitro fertilization, according to a 2008 review of seven clinical trials.

· Addiction: Often used to help quit smoking, drinking, drug use and overeating.

After decades of cynicism, Western medical experts are using high-tech tools to unravel the ancient mysteries of how acupuncture works.
