Here's Your Healthy Tip of the Day: I'll bet you didn't know I treat narrow angle glaucoma. It is possible to bring down the pressure in the eyes caused by narrow angle glaucoma by the treatment of acupuncture. I have successfully kept several patients from the operating table just by simple needling twice weekly.
Case Study: patient presented with narrow angle glaucoma in left eye with a level of 35. Surgery was scheduled in two weeks the day the patient arrived at my office. I suggested aggressive treatment strategy of 4 treatments weekly for the next two weeks and retest the pressure the day prior to the scheduled surgery. The day prior to surgery, the patient's occular pressure was down to 15. This patient has continued treatment twice weekly for the past several years. The occular pressure remains stable and no surgery has been necessary up until this point in time. The eye is an extremely delicate organ...surgery should be a last option; try acupuncture first!

Fun At 50
Here's Your Healthy Tip of the Day: Just for kicks and giggles, I'll make you laugh today just like the fellow laughed from AARP's motorcycle insurance division. I was on the telephone today obtaining the cheapest motorcycle insurance out of all the companies that offer the service with John from Foremost. I said, "wow....what a day! There's just so much fun at 50! This morning I had anesthesia...best nap I've had in years...no, they wouldn't give me a 'go cup'....just love that anesthesia....oh, what for? Oh yes, my first colonoscopy now that I'm an old bag and an AARP member....did you know with my AARP card I get a free donut at Dunkin Donuts when I buy a large coffee? Yeah...and now that you're giving me the motorcycle insurance at the best discount, I feel like I've just won the lotto! Oh, hey...what an exciting day, indeed...."
John replied, "wow, I see what I have to look forward to when I get to your age..."
For all you 'old farts' out there like me, remember....you're as young as you feel, so take good care of yourselves like me and live life to the edge...you only get one ride in life. I've decided that mine is going to be on 2 wheels!

Have You Had Your Colonoscopy Today?
Well, I've reached that milestone in life...50. I've my subscription to AARP and have my appointment all set for my first colonoscopy....how exciting - NOT!
Here's Your Healthy Tip of the Day: Whether you have a family history of colon cancer or not, a colonoscopy can detect early signs of cancer and polyps before they become a life-threatening situation. I have patients who have had no pre-existing signs or symptoms and no familial histories of colon cancer who have had life-saving diagnoses during their first colonoscopy. Colon cancer is not something anyone should have. I'm going for mine now that I'm 50 - you should schedule yours today if you already haven't and you've reached the big 5-0.

Acupuncture for Herniated Discs
I treat quite a number of patients who have herniated discs typically ranging from L1-L5. Those persons who come for regular treatment, engage in lifestyle changes, and become proactive in their treatment strategy enjoy a wonderful and fairly pain-free quality of life. Those persons who do not take an active role in their health typically undergo surgery, which dramatically affects their quality of life and physical condition going forward. Their journey to good health becomes an extremely difficult process due to their lack of participation at the onset of diagnosis.
Here's Your Healthy Tip of the Day: My patients who live with herniated discs experience regular weekly treatments and particpate in my Wellness Program. These folks are riding bicycles, playing golf, swimming and enjoying a great life. If you are experiencing daily pain due to disc herniation, call or email the office today for an appointment and get yourself on the road to an active and pain-free life.

FDA clears Covidien unit's brain aneurysm device
From the Associated Press, April 6, 2011
WASHINGTON — Federal health regulators said Wednesday they have approved a medical implant to shrink aneurysms in the brain and reduce the chance they will rupture. The device is a platinum and nickel tube used to cut off blood to the aneurysm, which is a swollen area of the artery that grows over time and can be fatal if it ruptures. The device is implanted in the carotid artery, which supplies blood to the front of the brain. Over time the implant shrinks the size of the aneurysm, reducing the chance of rupture.
The flexible mesh device is threaded up to the brain through an artery in the leg, eliminating the need for invasive brain surgery. The medical device manufacturer Ev3 is based in Menlo Park, Calif. It was acquired last year by Irish device maker Covidien PLC. The FDA approved the so-called Pipeline Embolization Device based on a study of 108 patients with large or giant aneurysms in the carotid artery. One year after implantation, 70 percent of aneurysms were contained by the device.
Here's Your Healthy Tip of the Day: If you haven't gone for your yearly checkup and bloodwork, please do it. If you haven't come in for your periodic acupuncture treatment, do that as well. You have one body, one life - so live it as best and as healthy as you can!
