Eat Right For Good Health

Going to the grocery store can sometimes be challenging.  What to buy?  What's healthy?  Should I buy organic?  What should I eat?

Here Are Your Tips For Healthy Eating:
Tour the perimeter of your grocery store. This is where you will find fresh fruits and vegetables, and all–natural dairy and meats.  This will certainly fill your basket!  Try to purchase organic foods as often as possible. Look for a label that states 'certified organic and pesticide free'.  Visit your local farmers’ market; usually the prices are a bit cheaper than the grocery store for all organic produce. If you've got a little plot of land, grow your own. Wash nonorganic produce; soak them for 20 minutes in water with salt and fresh lemon juice or vinegar.  Avoid high–pesticide foods, such as grapes, peaches, lettuce, strawberries, apples, pears, bell peppers, kale, carrots, celery, and nectarines.  Natural, hormone–free beef and chicken, and choose wild–caught fish are your best bets for animal protein.

Rest is the Best

All of us want to believe we still have the energy and stamina of a 16 year old.  Just recently, I woke up to the realization that unfortunately, I've slowed down a bit over the last 30 years.
Well now...what's a doggie to do??  Let's work with what we've got!  If you're about 50 years of age and you're working out like Demon Damien and you can't figure out why you're not gaining more muscles mass, why your libido is going down the drain or losing those last 10lbs is near to impossible....it could very well be because you are overtraining and not allowing your body to get enough rest.
Rest and good sleep is just as important to good homeostasis and bodily functions as the good food and exercise you're putting into the 'engine'.  Rest and sleep allow the body's hormones to work better and more efficiently.  Rest allows the microtears in striated muscle to repair...this leads to greater lean muscle mass and less fat.  So, how much rest do you need?  Every person's needs are different and this is a conversation that needs to take place on an individual basis.

Here's Your Healthy Tip of the Day:  Get yourself into a complete wellness program that includes a knowledgable fitness professional who will give you several workout routines based on your health and fitness level.  Part of the wellness program includes diet, stress management and acupuncture and/or herbal formulas.  And, if you're tired...Rest is the Best!

Visceral Adipose Tissue (VAT)...What You Should Know About Deep Fat Tissue

Courtesy of the Mayo Clinic, I thought I'd share an excert they've posted about belly fat....
"Gaining weight in your abdomen does more harm than simply making your waistband too tight. While putting on weight in general can have negative effects on your health, abdominal weight gain is particularly unhealthy. Too much belly fat increases your risk of:

■Heart disease
■Breast cancer
■Diabetes
■Metabolic syndrome
■Gallbladder problems
■High blood pressure
■Colorectal cancer
Researchers also have found that abdominal fat cells aren't just dormant energy waiting to be burned up. The cells are active, producing hormones and other substances that can affect your health. For example, some fat-cell-produced hormones can promote insulin resistance, a precursor to type 2 diabetes; others can produce estrogen after menopause, which may increase your breast cancer risk. Researchers are still sorting out how the excess hormones affect overall health, but they do know that too much visceral fat can disrupt the body's normal hormonal balance."

I Can, I Will, AND I DO!!!

No.....I'm not getting married for you wise guys out there!!!!  I'm talking about RUNNING!!!!!!
For a few months, every time I looked at the treadmill, I'd psyche myself out and that little voice in my head would say 'you can't, you'll look stupid doing 3 minutes on that thing, and you'll never run again'.

Two weeks ago, I told the voice in my head to SHUT UP!  I looked at the treadmill and said to myself, 'there's nothing wrong with you, get on that thing and just do your best'.  I CAN DO IT!!!!  Yesterday, I ran 45 minutes at an easy pce (approximately 4 miles), the last 5 minutes with 2.5lbs dumbells in my hands.  I feel great!!!!  Today, I'm going to do the same and make sure I get in my weight and strength training.  I've stopped saying 'I can't'.

Here's Your Healthy Tip of the Day:  Kill the little voice in your head that tells you you're no good, and tells you what you can and cannot do....YOU CAN, YOU WILL AND WILL DO!!....now, get out there and just do it!!!  No matter what you do, just try to do your best; speed, endurance and perfection can be attained; all you have to do is practice!
