Do You Have A Jeremy Lin Knee?

The Wall Street Journal Online posted that Jeremy Lin has a torn meniscus.  Today, read the following WSJ article and learn about the meniscus.

Here's Your Healthy Tip of the Day:  If you have a torn meniscus, you most likely do not require surgery.  Have your orthopaedist order an MRI.  If surgical reparation is not necessary, acupuncture and low level laser therapy is quite effective in treating those minor meniscus tears.  Just ask some of my patients who were referred to my by their surgeons who said 'go get acupuncture - you don't need surgery'.  They're all back to playing golf, basketball, running marathons and enjoying life.

Acupuncture for the Acupuncturist

Yesterday, I went to see a colleague for my own acupuncture session.  Yes, even I am affected by the change of weather; every injury I've ever sustained has come back to haunt me this past week.  After my session, I felt so relaxed and free of any aches and pains; I was happy to go back to my office, have a nice cup of tea, lots of water and look forward to a good book at the end of my day.

Here's Your Healthy Tip of the Day:  the weather is changing and the wind is picking up.  Don't wait until you're achey-breaky; schedule an appointment today for an Autumn Tune Up.  You'll feel wonderful, and your immune system will get a boost, so you'll be able to fight off any typical Autumn colds.

Acupuncture Improves Exercise Tolerance

Acupuncture can ‘remarkably’ improve exercise tolerance in patients with heart failure say German cardiology researchers.  Their study included 17 patients with congestive heart failure with mild or marked limitation to their activity- all on optimised medication. They were randomised to receive acupuncture or placebo – a needle that simulates the procedure without piercing the skin.  No improvement in cardiac ejection fraction or peak oxygen uptake was seen.  But the six minute walk distance was ‘remarkably increased’ in the acupuncture group by 32m on average, compared to a drop of 1m in the placebo group.
Post-exercise recovery and ventilatory efficiency were both improved in the acupuncture group but not in the placebo group.
Study leader Dr Johannes Backs, head of the research group at the department of cardiology at Heidelberg University Hospital said: ‘This is the first indication that acupuncture may improve exercise tolerance in CHF patients- when given in addition to optimised standard heart failure medication.’
