Eye Friendly Foods That Are Good For Your Heart As Well

The Journal Archives of Ophthalmology published a study on women who ate fish for age-related macular degeneration (AMD).  These women were 42% less likely to develop AMD compared to women who rarely ate a fish-rich diet.  Age-related macular degeneration is a disease where there is damage to nerve cells in the part of the eye called the macula.  AMD causes blurry vision.
Omega-3 fatty acids found in fish may reduce the inflammation that can play a role in AMD.
Vitamin C, E, zeaxanthin, and zinc are also helpful for the eyes.  Citrus fruits and leafy greens are high in vitamin C;  nuts, spinach, and fortified cereals for vitamin E; oysters, lean meats, and beans for zinc; and eggs and leafy green veggies for zeaxanthin.
According to the American Academy of Ophthalmology, after age 75, more than 30 percent of people develop some form of AMD.  Other causes can include  family history, smoking, and a diet high in saturated fat and cholesterol.

Here's Your Healthy Tip of the Day:  Get regular eye exams, and see an eye doctor if you experience any of the following signs:  Reading is becoming difficult, you have trouble seeing faces clearly, your vision becomes dim, fuzzy, or less sharp, you see a blind spot in your central field of vision, straight lines look wavy or curved.
