We can all improve the quality of our bones and help avoid osteoporosis. From infancy to young adulthood, bones build density. Mass peaks around 30 years of age and begins to break down at 50 years of age. If you start early with exercise and a few moderate lifestyle changes, you can have bones like stones!!
Did you know that about 44 million Americans have osteoporosis and low bone mass (osteopenia), that can go unnoticed until an actual break or fracture occurs? Wow, pretty incredible since this country is tops when it comes to having the finest medical diagnostic equipment in the world.....hmmm....Don't blame it on insurance companies or healthcare costs...there are plenty of FREE bone density testing days out there. Most people are ignorant, lazy or just don't care about their health to take a 5 minute, painless test.
According to the National Osteoporosis Foundation, one in two women and one in four men over age 50 will suffer an osteoporosis-related fracture during their lifetime...whew!!!! That could be YOU!!
Here's Your Healthy Tip of the Day: modifying your diet is the best way to have bones like stones! Calcium is crucial (1,000mg daily for adults 18-50 yrs and 1,200 daily for those over 50). Vitamin D helps your body absorb calcium. Vitamin K2 assists in the creation of proteins that incorporate calcium and other minerals into bone. AlgaeCal is particularly absorbable. COFFEE can inhibit the absorption of calcium, so it's best to wait an hour either before or after coffee to take your supplements.
EXERCISE....weight bearing exercise builds bone mass. Having been an athlete most of my life, I went for a bone density test. I found out I had the bone density of a 22 year old (described as a 'brick house') and at the rate I was going at 49, on the charts, I'll be 122 years of age before anyone would dream of suggesting I should worry about my bones. Honestly, I really don't want to live until 122 (just think of the visual here...ugh!), but I'm gonna keep up with my exercise and diet modifications, cause I sure don't want a broken or fractured bone spoiling my fun!!
A SPECIAL TIP FOR THE MEN TODAY: hey guys, you're often left out on the bone density partywagon. Speak with your healthcare practitioner and get yourselves a baseline bone density test!! Medical doctors often neglect men's bone health and never order a baseline test and then, it's too late! IT AIN'T JUST FOR THE GIRLS!!!!
