Quack, Quack....Duck is Good For You

For the folks out there that are not red meat eaters and are tired of chicken and turkey - here's some good news about duck.  A cupful of skinless duck contains 33 grams of protein and only 281 calories.  It contains more iron, zinc and copper than chicken or turkey (source:  Mens' Health Dec 2011).

Here's Your Healthy Tip of the Day:  It's Duck Season!  You can grill it, roast it, chop it, grind it and make every single dish with duck breast that you would with chicken or turkey.  If you're lucky enough to get a whole duck, then place it skinless on a rack in a pan with 1/3 water and roast it at 400 degrees farenheit.  Any fat will drip from the duck into the hot water bath.  It's delicious and nutritious!

Don't Touch That Soda!

Hey all you soda jerks out there!  Check out the stats on this one:

Sunkist  Soda(1 bottle, 20 fl oz)
320 calories
0 g fat
84 g sugars
Sugar Equivalent: 6 Breyers Oreo Ice Cream Sandwiches

Sodas all earn 100 percent of their calories from sugar, but that doesn’t mean there aren’t still varying levels of atrocity. Despite the perception of healthfulness, fruity sodas tend to carry more sugar than their cola counterparts, and none make that more apparent than Sunkist. What makes the orange soda 'top gun' on the list of worsts is its additional ingredients of the artificial colors yellow 6 and red 40—two chemicals that may be linked to behavioral and concentration problems in children.

Here's Your Healthy Tip of the Day:  If you must have orange soda, drink these instead:
Izze Sparkling Clementine (1 bottle, 12 fl oz)
120 calories
0 g fat
27 g sugars

And, if you're not too lazy, just add a few tablespoons of naturally squeezed orange juice to a glass of seltzer...that's your best tip of the day!!
