There is no single Western medical treatment that has been proven to be effective in the treatment of chronic urticaria (CU). CU is more common that one would think and affects more women than men. CU can 'come and go', but rashes can last more than several months. Antihistamines are usually prescribed, but not a cure for CU. It is idiopathic (no known cause) but there has been speculation that autoimmunity has much to do with the disease based on IgE receptor tests on skin mast cells.
Here's Your Healthy Tip of the Day: In Traditional Chinese Medicine, we view CU as a result of a 'wind invasion' resultant from a deficiency of Wei Qi (the body's natural immune system or defense mechanism). Through the treatment strategy of acupuncture and Chinese herbal formulas, it has been found that these modalities are quite effective in the treatment of CU.
