An Apple a Day

I'll be honest - I don't like apples.  I don't like apple pie, apple cake, baked apples, but I do like my own apple compote.  But, I wish I did like apples because they're one of the best fruits out there for you!
Apples contain a high water content, soluble fiber (which helps prevent blood sugar spikes that lead to cravings), and insoluble fiber which helps give you that full feeling.  One medium apple contains approximately 85% water and 5 grams of soluble fiber.  Apples also contain the flavonoid quercetin (which helps fight some cancers, helps to reduce cholesterol damage and boost your lung power).
You SHOULD buy only organic apples, because commercial raised apples contain more pesticide residue on their skins.
Here's Your Healthy Tip of the Day:  An apple a day CAN help keep the doctor and fat away.  But if you're like me and you don't like apples, I've got a great and easy recipe for you that's low in sugar and fat and tastes unbelievable on nonfat yougurt for a really powerful and delicious snack or meal:

Madame Mondesire's Apple Compote
4 big baking apples or a nice big bowl of whatever type you find at the market...not green!
1 Tablespoon all natural vanilla extract
1/2 cup black and yellow raisins (mixed)
1 Tablespoon ground cinnamon

Directions:  cut up the apples and toss all the ingredients in a bowl.  Heat all ingredients with about 1 cup of water on slow cook in a covered pot until soft.  Try this in oatmeal, on yogurt or just plain in a bowl...Great stuff!
